It was featured in the modern-day film, Pirates of the Caribbean. By the year 1670, as the buccaneer era was in decline, most of the pirates, seeking a new source of trade, turned to log cutting and trading wood from the island. At this same time, an English pirate started to promote himself and invite the pirates on the island of Tortuga to set sail under him.

The successful buccaneers Captain Nicholas Van Horn and Laurens-Cornille Baldran de Graaf attacked numerous Spanish settlements. But in 1697 the Spanish ceded Saint Domingue to France, and the governor of the colony, Jean-Baptiste du Casse, persuaded the remaining buccaneers on Tortuga to settle peacefully on Saint Domingue. Anthony Hilton, aware of its centrality, first settled the island in 1630, helping to provide a strategic location from which freebooters could safely travel.
Île de la Tortue is coterminous with the commune of Tortuga, which is split into two communal sections; Pointe des Oiseax and Mare Rouge. "Method of Securing the Ports and herbes marines Populations of All the Coasts of the Indies", from 1694, discusses Tortuga's history with piracy. Tortuga has been portrayed in many works depicting piracy in the Caribbean in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Tortuga Island, just north of the western tip of Hispaniola (present-day Haiti), was an important strategic location in particular for the activities of seventeenth-century French buccaneers. The island had been a rendezvous for rovers of all nations since the time of Francis Drake, and from 1630 on, as tobacco production gave way to sugar growing, it became the headquarters for French freebooting. In December 1802, the native General, Capois, commandant of Port-de-Paix, conceived the project of burning the French establishments at La Tortue.
